SHOT IN THE ARM FOR INGUTSHENI

Ingutsheni central hospital has received a major boost from Proton Bakers which is supplying the health institution with bread daily.

The psychiatric hospital has been receiving a donation of 50 loaves per day since October this year.

Ingutsheni chief executive officer (CEO) Ernest Manyawu confirmed the donation and thanked Proton for the assistance.

Proton moved into Bulawayo earlythis year and has managed to position itself as a strategic partner for various social activities in the city.

Also receiving bread donations is Sir Humphrey Gibbs Training Centre, a rehabilitation centre for children living with disabilities.

Such donations come as a relief to both institutions whose operations have been affected by the economic challenges troubling the country.

In 2015, Health and Childcare minister David Parirenyatwa admitted the the government was struggling to fund adequate foodstuffs and medicine to Ingutsheni Hospital. This triggered a spate of donations from wellwishers including some based in the United Kingdom but in the recent past such benevolence has been scarce.

However, to successfully rehabilitate people with any health challenge, food and nourishment is fundamental as any imbalance can curtail recovery and development.

Proton Bakers have therefore managed to prioritise a critical sector which usually experiences budgetary strain while juggling financial resources to meet such expenses as medicines and utilities.

Proton sales manager Simba Bodzo said the reception the company had received in Bulawayo was humbling and warranted such gestures of appreciation.

“Our focus is on mutual benefit, we want the community to know that supporting our products and brands also means they can extend a helping hand to such critical institutions as our hospitals," Bodzo added.

However, the company does not limit itself to helping health facilities only as it has sponsored other activities including some emerging sport disciplines.

Proton was the main sponsor for the inaugural Bulawayo mini football association tournament, earlier this year.

In addition, the bread-makers have also sponsored such competitions as the Bulawayo pool association tournament and the Mr and Ms ZITF bodybuilding contests.

During the ZRP service charter launch in Bulawayo, the bakers provided support in the form of clothing, prizes and entertainment for the event which was aimed at applauding and encouraging improved service provision by the police.

Nationally, Proton participated in the 2017 NASH under 20 tournament as the main sponsor alongside the Surrey group. The two companies managed to bankroll the schoolboys’ soccer
competition with a $5000 sponsorship package.

Bulawayo has also welcomed employment prospects provided by Proton Bakers whose workforce has been steadily increasing from an initial 35 to a current 127 employees.

COSAFA Women`s Championship: Zimbabwe beat Kenya to set up final with South Africa

Zimbabwe will face South Africa in the finals of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s championships after exhibiting an improved all round performance to beat Kenya in a Semi-final match on Thursday.

The Mighty Warriors qualified for the semi-finals as overall best losers, coming second in group A behind Zambia, having failed secure two wins in the group which also comprised Malawi and Madagascar.

Zimbabwe therefore had to depend on favourable results from the other two groups  where Lesotho and Kenya beat Namibia and Swaziland, respectively, to deny them three points which would have seen either of the two countries pip Zimbabwe to the only qualifying spot as best group runners up.

Despite gifting Zimbabwe a semi-final berth, Kenya were run over by the Mighty Warriors who scored four unanswered goals.

Ten minutes into the game, Rutendo Makore showed composure and skill in the penalty area, dribbling past two defenders and placing a well-timed shot past Kenyan goalkeeper - Poline Owino.

Berita Kabwe doubled the defending champions’ lead in the 44th minute which ensured the tournament hosts went into the break leading 2- 0.

Six minutes into the second half, Marjory Nyaumwe added another goal to give Zimbabwe a comfortable 3-0 cushion which allowed them to sit back and wait for fortuitous Kenyan lapses on the field of play.

Indeed, in the 87th minute, the East African ladies failed to close down Priviledge Mupeti who powered the ball past Owino to ensure Zimbabwe progressed to the final with a convincing 4-0 win and face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana who recovered from a three goal deficit to beat Shepolopolo of Zambia on penalties, in the first semi-final match, on Thursday.

Shepolopolo took control of the game in 20 minutes when Crestinah Kgatlana scored past Roxanne Baxter, in the South African goal.

Zambia went on to dictate the first half of the match and the teams resilience was rewarded on the stroke of half time, Grace Chanda scoring to give Shepolopolo a 2-0 lead at the break.

The Zambian onslaught on Banyana Banyana continued in the second half, resulting in their third goal from Misozi Zulu in the 78th minute.

However, South Africa’s introduction of Nompulelo Nyandeni for Chantelle Esau in the 65th minute was causing anxious moments for Zambia who were now struggling to contain a mobile Banyana Banyana midfield.

Leandra Smeda capitalised on an increasingly jittery Zambian defence, scoring three goals in ten minutes in the 75th, 78th (pen) and 83rd minute, to level scores and set up a penalty shootout game decider.

Banyana Banyana Scored all their five spot kicks while Zambia missed one , thus, succumbing to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the three time tournament winners.

Results in both matches moulded a battle of the Limpopo duel in the final where, defending champions, Zimbabwe will seek to retain their title against a team they dethroned in 2011. The match will be played on Sunday 24 September at Barbourfields stadium.

Zambia and Kenya will have a chance to redeem lost pride on Saturday 23 September in a third and fourth play-off at the same venue.

THE National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Under-20 soccer tournament provincial final competitions kick off this weekend with matches in Bulawayo and Midlands provinces on the 22nd of September.

PROTON CUP ENDS ON HIGH NOTE

THE inaugural Bulawayo mini football association tournament, sponsored by Proton Bakers, ended on a high note at the Bulawayo Bowling Club grounds on Sunday.

Mini football is a blended version of conventional five and eleven a-side modes of soccer, comprising two teams with six players each,  on a smaller outdoor field with two referees controlling the game from pitch sides.  Although the game is relatively new in Zimbabwe and its association in Bulawayo is also in its infancy stage, it is popular internationally.

Bulawayo mini football association chairperson, Tonderai Mwale (Ms) said, to date, Zimbabwean mini football was only formalised in Bulawayo and Harare provinces.

“We hope we can grow the game nationally and get a compliment of at least four provinces with functioning associations and leagues to facilitate registration with the Sports and Recreation Commission,” she added.

Mwale explained that the two day tournament held over the weekend was an attempt to popularise the sport whose league kicks off on the 7th of August.

She implored teams interested in joining the league to contact the association which is housed at the Bowling club offices and was adamant that the spirit exhibited during the tournament was proof that Bulawayo could sustain a vibrant competitive union.

However, Mwale’s plea was for corporate involvement to propel the initiative higher.

“We approached Proton Bakery for sponsorship during this tournament and they responded with cash and gift prizes plus a trophy.”

“We are humbled by such a response because we know how companies are usually apathetic towards small, unknown causes but Proton as you can see has exceeded expectations,” she added.

Proton has been operating in Bulawayo for a few months but is participating in various functions in the city including sports events like the Bulawayo pool tourney and Mr and Ms ZITF, donations and school fees benefits for its customers through promotions and competitions.

With the bread maker’s involvement as a bonus, this weekends’ mini football tournament saw eight teams - namely Gmans Football Club (GFC), Dynamic Diesel (DD), ZRP Bulawayo (ZRP), Market Stars Football Club, Nebusters Football (NF), ZIMRA Football (ZF), Castle Stars (CS), Mountain Climber (MC) and Zone 8 Football - battle for supremacy as the first champions of the competition.

After a competitive day of group games on Saturday, ZRP, DD, ZIMRA and Castle Stars made it to the semi finals on Sunday where Dynamic Diesel overcame ZRP and ZIMRA beat Castle Stars to progress to the final.

The resultant tournament decider was a hard fought, entertaining and taught exhibit which ended in a one all stalemate and had to be settled through penalties.

Dynamic Diesel proved more precise than ZIMRA putting all their six spot kicks past the tax men’s goalie while the revenue collectors saw one of their own ricochet off the upright, condemning them to a 6 – 5 loss at the hands of a self motivated diesel force.

This result signalled the end of action on the pitch and attention shifted to the Proton ensemble for awards where DD were aptly rewarded for their efforts, scooping the majority of prizes.

Handing out the Prizes was Proton Bulawayo sales and marketing coordinator Mduduzi Mathe, a natural crowd favourite for representing a company which was sprinkling confetti on an already happy gathering.
